We will be investigating the Mayans in the last two weeks of this half term. Where did the Mayans live and in what time period? As our focus is on 'achievements', can you find out what the Mayans are famous for?
The timeline of the Maya Civilization is often divided up into three major periods: the Pre-classic Period, the Classic Period, and the Post-classic Period. This enables their society to support larger populations and the cities begin to grow in size. 600 BC - The settlement at Tikal is formed. This will be one of the major cities in the Maya civilization. It will reach its peak in power during the Classic period. 400 BC - The first Mayan calendars are carved into stone.
The Mayans lived in mexico around 2600 BC. The Mayans are famous for cocoa beans which has now allowed us to eat chocolate. They were also famous for the pyramids. They built two different types of pyramids, both similar in some ways. One of them had a temple of a god and priests were meant to climb it to make a sacrifice.The second type of pyramid was a sacred pyramid built to a god. These pyramids were not to be climbed or touched by humans.

Long distance trade was developed, and the famous Mayan pyramids (temples) were built. The ancient Mayan people continued to develop the art, maths and science that they are famous for even today.

There are nearly 20 Mayan ruins sites on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. The ruins date from about 3,000 years ago and show evidence of activity after the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. The ruins are scattered throughout the region in the states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo and Campeche. Many sites have active archaeological digs and are major attractions for tourists throughout the year. Locations range from places deep in the jungle to places overlooking the coast.
The Maya period was set around 2600BC; Today this area is set in Southern Mexico. Amazingly, they were best known for their pyramids, they built it without metal tools. Also, The Mayans developed astronomy and writing. Related to this, they were very skilled farmers. However, to farm they would had to clear out a colossal amount of the rainforest.
The Mayans were very religious, they had many different rituals. Such as human sacrife. Although they were skilled at building, they also woved stunning fabics and designed musical instruments.
