  1. What was the Stone age?

The Stone Age is the name given to the earliest period of human culture when stone tools were first used. The Stone Age ended when men began smelting metal.

1.Our ancestor, modern man Homo sapiens emerged around 200,000 years ago.

2.Homo habilis, an early human who evolved around 2.3 million years ago, was probably the first to make stone tools.

3.Neanderthals died out around 30,000 years ago.
Flint was commonly used for making stone tools but other stones such as chert and obsidian were also used.

4.The Stone Age is divided into three periods; the Palaeolithic (old Stone Age), Mesolithic (middle Stone Age) and the Neolithic (new Stone Age).

5.Palaeolithic and Mesolithic people were nomadic hunter gatherers.

6.They moved frequently following the animals that they hunted and gathering fruits and berries when they could.

7.The dog was the first animal to be domesticated. This happened during the Mesolithic period. Dogs could help with the hunt, warn of danger and provide warmth and comfort.

8.The gradual development of agriculture and the domestication of animals during the Neolithic period meant that people could live in settled communities.

9.Some isolated tribespeople were still effectively living in the Stone Age as recently as the twentieth century.

10.The houses in Skara Brae, a Neolithic Orkney village, had beds, cupboards, dressers, shelves and chairs.

  4. The old Stone Age was an ancient time period when people made simple tools from stone. Wood, bones, and other kind of materials were also used for tools, but stone (especially a kind of stone called flint) was used to cut things.

This period began with the first stone tools, about 2.7 million years ago. Some groups of people were still in the stone age into the 20th century. They also killed animals for food and clothing.

The time after the Stone Age is the Bronze Age, named after the metal bronze. The Stone Age ended when people discovered the art of smelting (making metals). The first metal was copper, followed by bronze. People probably began using bronze instead of just stone in the Middle East sometime between 3000 and 2000 BC.

The Stone Age is divided by archaeologists (people who study relics) into three sections: Paleolithic ("old stone"), Mesolithic ("middle stone") and Neolithic ("new stone"). Pottery was invented during the Neolithic Stone Age. Some people also believe the art of writing began in the Neolithic Stone Age.

  5. What was life like during the Stone Age?

The Stone Age went on for a long time. Obviously in the beginning of the Stone Age rock shelters were the way to go. Any signs of trouble and the humans would go hiding in the caves. In India, the Bhimbetka rock shelters show the earliest signs of human life in the region. They are almost 30,000 years old. Some researchers have discovered Stone Age art in European caves. The inside walls of the cave are adorned with paintings of animals like horses, deer, and mammoths

  6. Tools
Historians divide the Stone Age into three different periods based on the sophistication and methods of tool design. The first such period is referred to as the Paleolithic, or Old Stone Age. The Old Stone Age began about 2 million years ago with the development of the first tools by Homo habilis and lasted until around 12,000 years ago.

The Mesolithic, or Middle Stone Age, began around 12,000 years ago and continued through about 8,000 years ago. The Neolithic, or New Stone Age, lasted from 8,000 years until around 5,000 years ago.
