  1. PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT

    Who built the Pyramids?

Pyramids were built as tombs for the pharaohs and queens. The Egyptians believed that if the pharaoh's body could be mummified after death the pharaoh would live forever. The tombs were designed to protect the buried Pharaoh's body and his belongings. The pyramids were built to keep the pharaohs treasures safe for the afterlife.

    Where were the Pyramids built?

The pyramids were built in Saqqara, Memphis and Giza. Most of the pyramids can be found on the western side of the Nile River, just into the dry desert. The dry desert heat worked to keep the Pharaohs’ body and his belongings from decomposing and rotting away. The reason they built the pyramids next to the Nile River was so it would be easier to get the blocks to the pyramid. The pyramids of Egypt are all built to the west of the Nile River. This is because the western side was associated with the land of the dead. The stones could be bought nearer to the pyramid building site by boat. The pyramids were built by skilled craftsmen. Egyptian Pyramids often contain multiple chambers and passages.

    What’s inside the Pyramids?

Deep inside the pyramids lays the Pharaoh's burial chamber which would be filled with treasure and items for the Pharaoh to use in the afterlife. The walls were often covered with carvings and paintings. Near the Pharaoh's chamber would be other rooms where family members and servants were buried. There were often small rooms that acted as temples and larger rooms for storage. Narrow passageways led to outside.

Sometimes fake burial chambers or passages would be used to try and trick grave robbers. Because there was such valuable treasure buried within the pyramid, grave robbers would try to break in and steal the treasure. Despite the Egyptian's efforts, nearly all of the pyramids were robbed of their treasures by 1000 B.C.
There are over 130 pyramids in Egypt including the biggest pyramids at Giza. The Great Pyramid is the largest and most famous of the pyramids. It was built for the Pharaoh Khufu. It is over 140 metres high and took 20 years to build. The Sphinx stands in front of all the pyramids in Giza. It has the body of a lion and the head of a pharaoh.

Some facts about the Great Pyramid of Giza

For over 3800 years, the Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest man made structure in the world. Although it has lost around 10 metres (33 feet) in height, it still stands around 146 metres (480 feet) above the ground.

It is believed that thousands of slaves were used to cut up the large blocks and then slowly move them up the pyramid on ramps. The pyramid would get slowly built, one block at a time. Scientists estimate it took at least 20,000 workers over 23 years to build the Great Pyramid of Giza. Because it took so long to build them, Pharaohs generally started the construction of their pyramids as soon as they became ruler.

    Different shapes of Pyramids

There are 3 different types of pyramids: step, bent and true pyramid. The first Egyptian pyramid is believed to be the Pyramid of Djoser, it was built in Saqqara around 4650 years ago (2640 BC). Saqqara is a huge ancient burial ground built near the Egyptian city of Memphis.

For some of the earlier pyramids archaeologists think that the steps were built as stairways for the pharaoh to use to climb to the sun god.

Later pyramids have more sloping and flat sides. These pyramids represent a mound that emerged at the beginning of time. The sun god stood on the mound and created the other gods and goddesses.

  2. Pyramids are basically burial tombs for Egyptian pharaohs. Tombs would normally be built of limestone. All tombs were built by slaves who did the work or died. The most famous pyramids are the 3 pyramids of Giza which are located in yes you guessed it Giza. Most pyramids are made of a number of chambers: the burial chamber where the pharaohs bodies would be kept; the treasure chamber to keep all their riches to take with them to the after life; and the Queens chamber for their wives riches

  3. pyramids

The Egyptians built pyramids because they believed that if the mummified pharaohs would live forever. That is why they had designed tombs to protect the buried pharaohs and their belongings. The pyramids were made on the western side of the River Nile, just about into the dried desert. The dried up dessert heat helps because it stops the pharaohs from rotting away. The reason they built the pyramids near the River Nile is because it would be easier to get the block into the pyramids. The Great pyramid is the biggest and famous pyramid of them all. It was built for Pharaoh Khuf. It is about 140 meters high and it took about 20 years to make the pyramid. The Sphinx (The sphinx is a statue it has a body of a lion and a face of a pharaoh) in front of all the pyramids of Giza.

  4. The pyramids of Egypt were built to represent the famous Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Each pyramid had the treasures and tombs of the Pharaoh and was protected by guards until the modern days. The earliest pyramid is known to be in Saqqara, Northwest of Memphis. The earliest pyramid of these is the pyramid of Djoser which was built during the third dynasty. Some of the most famous pyramids are in Giza, the outskirts of Cairo, several of these pyramids are some of the most largest structures. The pyramid Khufu is the largest pyramid, it is none of the seven wonders of the ancient world still in existence. The number of workers who built the pyramids came from a few thousand workers, then 20,000 workers and then 100,000 men working on these structures. The Pharaohs were buried in pyramids many different shapes and sizes between the beginning of the old kingdom and end of the middle kingdom. There are about 80 pyramids the largest ones are the three pyramids of Giza which were built at the beginning of the old kingdom.

They were built in 2589 and 2504. The people who built it were able to carry heavy stones across the desert by using a simple technique, the technique is wet the sand in front of a contraption built to pull heavy objects.

  12. The reason we don’t have more pyramids available to us is because we don’t actually know how they were built. The ancient Egyptians left us no clues. The oldest pyramid in Egypt is believed to be over 4500 years old. Three of the pyramids actually had swivel doors at their entrance.Of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Pyramid is still standing today. The Great Pyramid of Giza is estimated to be made of around 2,300,000 blocks of stone.
